Adirondack Waters
August 15-18
Blue Mountain Lake, New York

with Mark Bowie

Overview

The central Adirondack Lake country is steeped in regional history and natural beauty. Being one of the most water-saturated areas of the Adirondack Park, its waters were the primary attraction for early tourists to the North Country. Grand hotels sprung up on many of the larger lakes. Steamboats plied the waters. Guides built the unique Adirondack guideboat to ferry city sportsmen around in quest for fish and game. The area remains a tourist destination today. Its unique mix of mountains, woods, water, and quaint lakeside villages is both picturesque and enchanting.

To photographers, the variety of lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, wetlands and waterfalls presents a wealth of creative opportunities. There are numerous waters, in close proximity to photograph: Blue Mountain Lake, Indian Lake, Lewey Lake, and Lakes Durant, Adirondack and Abanakee, Shaw Pond, the Indian River, and Buttermilk Falls. Each offers chances to photograph great sunrise and sunset light from numerous locations. Each reflects the landscape’s many moods and doubles the beauty through reflection. There may also be opportunities to photograph wildlife such as song birds, mallards, mergansers, loons, great blue herons, eagles, and mammals, including chipmunks, squirrels, coyote, fox, and maybe even the elusive moose.

Mark Bowie is an authority on the region, having photographed it extensively for his books, Adirondack Waters: Spirit of the Mountains and The Adirondacks: In Celebration of the Seasons. Mark will be guiding outdoor shooting sessions to many of his favorite locations and presenting indoor instructional sessions on the art of photographing water. He’ll explore the role of weather and natural light, photographers’ creative use of varying shutter speeds, the use of filters, and techniques to capture reflections. He’ll give special emphasis to capturing images digitally, applying state-of-the-art multiple-shot techniques, including stitching panoramas, creating high dynamic range images, expanding resolution and depth of focus, combining separate exposures in Photoshop, and processing RAW files separately for highlights and shadows.

Come immerse your creative side in the incredible beauty of Adirondack waters, side-by-side with a noted teacher and guide!
